Chagres National Park was established to protect the Rio Chagres watershed which supplies 80% of the water needed to operate the Panama Canal as well as the consumption requirements of the city. It is the wildest of the reserves near to the canal and this area is home to many animals including jaguars and ocelots. The Rio Chagres is the only river in the world that empties into two oceans.

I have been lucky enough to venture a few times deep into the Darién Gap (that untamed jungle between Colombia and Panama) to live with and photograph an indigenous tribe, part of the Embera people. It is a sweltering two day trek through parrot, snake and monkey filled mountainous jungle, with the serious added thrill-factor of hungry Jaguars and fully-armed drug-dealers. Living with the Embera in their secluded community, sharing their huts, bathing in their river, and eating whatever they eat (one special experience was deep-fried rat) is a rare and special privilege. My aim has been to understand how they live, work and play, and then come up with ways to ensure their survival and the continuation of their history, culture and traditions in a world that seems determined to encroach on their lives and their homeland.

Raiding parties tended to be small, and since the object was horses, not battle, the ideal raid was one in which the horses were taken without alerting the owners. The Native Americans in Trouble Hunters bristle with weapons—shields and lances, bows and arrows, a rifle and knives—suggesting they are scouts sent in advance of a large party that is prepared to fight. Apparently the men have spotted something and are waiting for the others to catch up. Russell often set scenes like this at day’s end, basking the Native Americans in the sun’s fading warmth, symbols of Russell’s own nostalgia for the vanished West...

In the 1860s... the Lakota/Cheyenne people feared that their way of life would be forever changed by the influx of the white man. In this scene, a council of Cheyenne headmen is meeting, in front of a sacred rock, to make plans for protecting their people’s way of life.
Archer`s comment: Such meeting of European natives in the present crazy days would be called as a: criminal, rasistic, xenofobic, radical right-wing nazis cell... and so on... just ask nearest multicultural activist.
