“The birch bark canoe, in this case an Ojibwe long-nose style, is a favorite subject of mine. It has an inherent beauty and when combined with its functionality, it is a wonderful work of art in itself.”

"...“Schreyvogel’s obsession for detail and historical accuracy never flagged. He talked to Indian veterans of the wars, using the laborious sign language and his homemade dictionary. He was not content with stories—sometimes full blown. He demanded details... What were the size and thickness of the stirrup leathers, the type of headdress worn by the chiefs? Were the feathers eagle or hawk? Were their ponies painted for war with the tails bobbed?"

"this second in the series of depictions of our famous Colonel Daniel Boone takes a look at the explorer as he left the United States in 1799 and entered Spanish Louisiana, what became St. Charles County, Missouri. The Spanish Governor appointed Boone judge and commandant of the Femme Osage district where he served until the territory became part of the United States in 1804. Still a vigorous hunter at age 64, he often had Osage hunting companions."

On the edge of the bluff is a low circular mound created by the Mississippian culture of mysterious purpose. The site is in the migratory path of an incredible variety of birds and still hosts numerous native flora."

There exists a diary of a Jesuit Priest that describes his travels up the Missouri River to the area of the Femme Osage and Tavern Creek where axe men harvested cedar logs to raft down the river to St Louis in mid-1760’s. Arriving at the Mississippi wharf of the new town, French residents purchased the timbers to build their vertical cedar-log cabins.

From the diary of a traveler: “Sometime during the spring or early summer of 1805, Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone headed west with half a dozen men and packhorses laden with heavy kettles. When they reached the springs or lick, they built a fireplace or furnace from nearby rock. It extended thirty feet with a width of five feet. The walls rose four feet and the top remained open in order to hold their forty kettles over the flames. Once the furnace had been completed, they cut and stacked wood, dipped water from the fast flowing spring, filled kettles, and started the fire.”

Inspired by the “Art of the Osage” exhibit of artifacts at the St Louis Art Museum in 2004, People of the Middle Waters explores the relationship between the Osage’s most sacred bird, the kingfisher, and the hunt. The original painting represented the state of Missouri at the U.S Embassy to Luxembourg for four years under the United States Ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg from 2005 to 2009.

Commissioned by a collector of Osage artifacts, this large painting depicts an historic scene of a hunting party of Sioux fleeing their enemy, the Osage down the Missouri River to an overland route across a spit of land to escape up the Mississippi River outdistancing their rivals. French explorers later named the place, Portage de Sioux.
